I love sunsets. This is the sunset over Lake Whatcom, the smaller portion on the side of Electric Avenue where no one swims.

I know this is similar to one I took earlier in this project but it's my favorite kind of picture to take.

Memorial Day

I don't avoid the topic of death with Carley. It is a simple fact of life. We drove through Bayview cemetery today and I told her how my grandma and grandpa were buried in there. She replied "that's so sad. Maybe Santa can bring them back."

Eye exam

Just my bi-yearly checkup. The equipment, I think, is kind of cool looking. So when the doctor was out, I snapped this.

I've worn glasses since 7th grade. This thing has never changed. All of this equipment for two eyes.

Wood Forts

My brother and I grew up next to a railroad. Believe it or not, trains used to come through Bellingham via the now know inter-urban trail from Sunnyland to Alabama hill.

The tracks had lots of woods and we played for HOURS building forts. Kids love the woods and Carley is no exception.

Brick buildings

I love the old buildings in downtown. They have so much more character than buildings these days.

Downtown used to be so different when I was a kid, it was the place to go (before we ever got a mall). It's funny how old it looks now. I appreciate these old buildings more now.

Project Idea

I saw this and thought this would be a great side project. If you do it too, link me your photos. I'd love to see what you come up with.

The girls

A tradition I love, probably my favorite all year long. Mothers day brunch. 4 generations all at once, from my 83 year old grandma to my 4 year old daughter.

I make us have a group shot every year and this year I did mother/daughter shots. I love how it turned out and wish I'd done it every year.

The lost days (day 3)

Blogger had some issues and apparently lost some of my posts, making me appear to be behind by 3 days. This is my attempt to catch up.

Thanks, Blogger.

The look

Ok, honesty time. I didn't actually take this picture but I love it so I'm posting it anyway.

Mothers Day, my daughter, who has had her picture taken so many times she now runs when she sees the camera.

We were posing for family pairings and my sister in law, Renae, snapped this. I love this look. It's the "evil eye" a trait passed down from my mom.

Rose

I love roses. My husband brought me some mothers day roses but the highlight of getting them was when he gave our daughter a rose.

Her eyes lit up and she said "I always wanted a rose, I never thought I'd get one."

The best thing about Chris - ok, everything is the best but he is in tune with women. He is a huge softie and I love that.

The 80's

In middle school I went through this phase where I wore neon clothes. Head to toe. And it wasn't just one color, it was all of them in one outfit.

Thank GOD there weren't digital cameras back then cause that's one phase I don't need to relive in my memories.

Thankfully the colors are coming back on their own. Joy.

Photos from the 60's

In scanning my parents photo albums I have come across so many interesting pictures, and not just of my childhood. The white house, JFK's grave, 3 years after his death, the Washington Monument. You forget that not only do people change, but the world changes too.

Memories

(me and Uncle Ted)

I'm interrupting this Project 365 to talk about photos. I know, boring. But really let's talk about photos. I like to think that I am expanding my ability with this project but another project I am working on is to scan all of my parents printed photos.

I can't even begin to tell you how great this has been. Not only does it take me back to vacations with my family, but I'm seeing that not every picture needs to be this awesome posed shot. Heck, not even a great candid shot is necessary. There is so much more to these photos then just what's in the picture.

These pictures show me what everyone used to look like. It shows my parents house and how it used to be. I'm reminded of vacations I thought I had forgotten about, a dress I forgot I used to wear all the time because it was similar to one my mom owned. It reminded me of an embarrassing crush I had on my Uncle Ted.

These photos aren't just photos, they are memories of me and my family.

And the best part? Technically speaking they are crappy pictures. There's lots of fuzzy ones, there's some of me and my brother where Jason's head is cut off. There's a lot where the subject is off to one side. And yet, I smile at each one of these photos.

I normally overly critical of my photos. If it looks fuzzy, I delete it. I try to make my candid shots better composed, but in reality, when Carley is older and wants to remember her first vacation she isn't going to give a crap about any of that. She's going to look at what I look at...the people, the places and the feelings it brings back just simply by looking at it.

Photos aren't just well-composed portraits, they are someone's memories.

Maybe I'm just a sentimental softie, but scanning these pictures has been one project I am so glad I took on.

Whatcom Middle School

I drive by the school almost every day. I went there for 3 somewhat miserable years yet I was sad when fire ravaged the building. It's nice to see this old school being rebuilt while keeping the historic motto "Waste Not Thy Hour".

Intimate portrait

I wish I could get out more with my Nikon. I'm a full time working mom and frankly my family comes first. But I bought some cardboard backdrops for less than $2.00 each and I love the way it turned out. So easy.

As for Carley, she has her dads blue eyes with my moms intensity. She has always had beautiful eyes, a compliment I myself has received from time to time.

This was the wall outside the Arne Hanna Swimming Pool. I loved the way the roots were winding up the cracks between the bricks.
